Materials Guide: PLA vs PETG
PLA vs PETG: Which 3D Printing Material Should You Choose?
Not sure which material to pick for your part? Most of our customers choose between PLA and PETG, and both are good choices. The right one depends on what the part needs to do. This guide explains the differences in plain terms.

The short answer
Choose PLA for detailed, rigid parts that stay indoors, such as display models, visual prototypes and fit-check parts. Choose PETG when you need something tougher that can handle knocks, warmth and moisture, such as replacement parts, brackets and functional prototypes.

PLA: best for detail and display
- Crisp detail and a clean, matt finish
- Stiff and rigid
- A good, economical choice for prototypes and concept models
- Can become brittle under impact, and softens in warm conditions (a car on a sunny day, near a radiator)
PETG: best for tough, practical parts
- More impact resistant and slightly flexible, so it tends to bend before it breaks
- Handles heat, moisture and many everyday chemicals better than PLA
- A slightly glossier finish
- Not quite as sharp on very fine detail
Which should I choose?
- Visual prototype or presentation model: PLA
- Part that will be handled, dropped or clipped: PETG
- Replacement part for use around the home or garden: PETG
- Fine detail or small decorative pieces: PLA
- Anything near warmth or damp: PETG
